If you are missing a tooth or multiple teeth, then a bridge might be able to help restore and enhance your smile.

What is a bridge?

As the name suggests, bridges have been designed to help ‘bridge’ a gap in a mouth. This gap could be caused by just one or several missing teeth. A bridge will fill this gap with prosthetic teeth that are attached to the healthy teeth on either side of the gap.

Why should I replace my missing teeth?

As a practice that promotes preventive dentistry, we also recommend replacing missing teeth where possible at The Corner House Dental Practice. Missing teeth can lead to further oral health issues in the future, as well as having a direct, detrimental effect on the patient in the short term. Gaps in the mouth can cause difficulty eating and speaking for example, as well as lead to unhappiness with your smile.

If you think you might be in need of a bridge or are interested in any of our treatments at The Corner House Dental Practice, please contact us or call us on 01403 251 015.

FAQs

Are there different types of bridges available?

There are several different bridge types available, and we’ll be able to recommend which is most suitable for you and your needs at a consultation.

The most commonly placed bridges include:

  • Traditional Bridges: these bridges comprise a set of prosthetic teeth held in place by crowns on either side, which are then attached to the adjacent healthy teeth.
  • Maryland Bonded Bridges: with these bridges, the prosthetic teeth are held in place by a metal framework that is bonded to the back of the adjacent healthy teeth or teeth.
  • Cantilever Bridges: these bridges use just one healthy tooth to hold the prosthetic teeth in place and are a good option for replacing teeth closer to the front of the mouth.

What is the treatment process like?

The first stage of placing a bridge involves a consultation with us here at Corner House Dental Practice, where we can determine whether a – and which type of – bridge is appropriate for you. We will often take an X-ray at this stage so we can ascertain the bone density and structure of the jaw.

Once your treatment has been decided upon, you’ll return to us here at the practice, and we’ll first prepare the teeth on either side of the bridge. If we are placing a traditional bridge, a small layer of enamel may need to be removed, and we’ll then take an impression or digital scan, which will be used to make your bridge.

Once your bridge is ready, you can come back into the practice to have it placed. We’ll make sure it sits and fits properly and comfortably in the mouth and go through all your after-care needs with you.
